Ellie Helbling scored goals two minutes apart midway through the second quarter to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Denison University on Sunday morning in Newport News, VA. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.
After a slow first quarter, in which both offenses struggled to provide a great deal of pressure, UMW jumped ahead in the second. Proffitt started the scoring at 20:50, using an assist from senior
Emma Bernard. Just 2:01 later, Helbling added an insurance score on a feed from sophomore
Hannah Jadgchew. The Eagles held he two-goal margin until the final horn.
UMW led in shots, 23-4, as well as penalty corners, 8-3. Sophomore Tori WInans made one save in 51 minutes, and junior
Erin Roy added three in a busy nine minutes of relief.Â
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater College at 6:00 p.m.
