Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Scott, Bernard Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Roanoke in '24 Lidlifter

Junior forward Grayson Scott scored a pair of first half goals, as senior forward Emma Bernard broke a 2-2 tie with 2:14 remaining in regulation to give the University of Mary Washington field hockey team a 3-2 victory over visiting Roanoke College on Friday afternoon at the Battleground in both teams' season opener.

Scott and the Eagles jumped on top first, as Scott scored on a pass in the circle from sophomore Hannah Jadgchew with 7:21 left in the first quarter, and UMW held the 1-0 advantage to the first quarter final whistle.

Roanoke tied the score on a penalty corner 2:41 into the second quarter, and used another corner to vault ahead with 5:33 left before halftime. But the Eagles used another Scott score, this time on a Paige Stewart pass, to knot the score just 32 seconds later, and the score remained tied through halftime and deep into the fourth quarter.

Bernard took the ball off a keeper save of a Jadgchew shot and caged the game winner with 2:14 left on the fourth quarter clock.

UMW led in shots, 11-10, and Roanoke led in penalty corners, 10-4. UMW sophomore goalie Tori Winans made three saves on the day in gaining the victory.

The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, when they face Denison University in Newport News, VA, at 10:30 a.m.
