The Mary Washington men's soccer team got off to a fast start on Friday afternoon in its season opener and never looked back -- downing N.C. Wesleyan, 2-0.
2023 All-American
Carter Berg recorded his first brace of the 2024 season in the first 15 minutes, proving that's all the Eagles needed in a dominate outing.
Berg scored in the 10th minute on a ball from
Nelsar Castillo for the first goal of the season, then five minutes later,
Jordy Santana found Berg for the second score of the game.
Mary Washington controlled the pace from start to finish as the Eagles recorded 21 total shots -- 11 in the first half, the other 10 coming in the second 45 minutes -- as they forced the Bishop's keeper to make eight saves.
Freddy Rogers continued his dominance in net as he recorded his 11th clean sheet in 23 career games as an Eagle, forcing five saves -- on nine shots -- along the way. UMW, too, led in corners, 8-5.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a matchup against Rutgers-Newark at the Battleground.Â
