It didn't take long for the Mary Washington women's soccer team to come away with a victory to begin the new season as the Eagles took care of business down in Ashland, Va., finishing off Randolph-Macon in a 2-1 affair.
The Eagles took an early lead on
Eliza Franklin's first goal of the season as
Maci Landel found Franklin for the goal, putting the Eagles up, 1-0., in the 14th minute
Then, just eight minutes later, the Eagles netted their second goal on a second Landel assist as this time the sophomore found
Madison Bauserman, who put UMW up, 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets would counter with a late goal in the 80th minute, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles were able to stop the momentum, holding RMC scoreless the rest of the way.
The Eagles led in corner kicks (6-2) and were able to take advantage of their five team shots, as they netted a pair.
Morgan Hicock and
Sydney Alexander combined to stop all 11 of the Yellow Jackets' shots, as Hicock recorded three saves in the first half before yielding the second half to Alexander.
Ellen Shine led the way for the Eagles in shots with a pair (one on goal), while Franklin, Bauserman and
Erin Reynolds all recorded a shot apiece.
Mary Washington is back in action on Sunday night as it takes on Penn State-Harrisburg in Middletown, Pa. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
