UMW Baseball Sweeps Westminster on Saturday to Improve to 6-0

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader from Westminster College on Saturday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium, running its season record to 6-0. The Eagles took game one, 9-3, before claiming the nightcap, 9-4.

The Eagles jumped ahead with a run in the second on a pair of hits. Tommy Martinez led off with a double, and advanced to third on an infield single from George Rizzo. Luke Guerzon was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Jacob Christenbury followed with a one-out sacrifice fly. UMW added a pair in the third on a two-run single from Guerzon, plating Ty Lowe and Bobby Ayscue.

The Eagles broke the game open with a six-run in the fifth. Rizzo provided a two-run triple, and then scored on a balk. UMW loaded the bases again, and Burke Steifman gained an RBI fielder's choice. Ayscue and Lowe followed with RBI singles.

Westminster plated three runs in the seventh to spoil the shutout. Four of their five hits came in the last frame.

Rizzo led the Eagles with a triple, single, and walk, with two RBI and one run scored. Christenberry was 2-2 with the sac fly, and Lowe went 2-3 with a walk, and Ayscue and Martinez each had a pair of hits. Guerzon tied for the team lead with two RBI.

Senior Justin Ritz gained his second win of the season, allowing one hit in five innings, walking one and striking out five. Eric McDaniel added one inning of hitless relief.

In game two, the Eagles busted ahead in the second inning, with two runs. Lowe and Martinez each singled, and both scored on a Guerzon single to center.

In the third, Steifman walked and stole second before Ayscue followed with a walk.  Lowe and Martinez provided RBI singles, and Lowe scored on a balk.

Westminster scored once in the sixth on a wild pitch. UMW bounced back in the bottom of the seventh, as Ryan Schwarz led off with a triple, and scored on a Steifman single. Ayscue walked and Lowe was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Martinez, whose fielder's choice ended in two runs scoring.

In the eighth, Ayscue provided a two-out single to score Onkar Dhillon for an insurance run.

Martinez, Ayscue, and Lowe led the Eagles with two hits apiece. Lowe and Ayscue both drove in one and scored twice, and Martinez knocked in two and scored once.

Senior Gabe Delgado gained the win, allowing one earned run in three innings of relief. Jackson Myers started and twirled three scoreless frames, and senior Brendan McComber closed the game out.
