Megan Baxter led the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team with 13 and 10 points each as the Eagles fell to Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va., 63-51.
Though the final score might not indicate, but UMW played the Knights closely all game, trailing by five or fewer points -- even leading by two possessions at one point -- against a team that upset No. 7 Christopher Newport earlier this week.
The Eagles came out of the gate strong as they trailed Southern Virginia by just three points at the end of the first quarter, then heading into halftime the deficit was still at three when both the Knights and Eagles scored 12 points each, 30-27. UMW led by four points at the 6:21 mark in the second quarter before the Knights rallied.
In the third quarter, UMW outscored Southern Virginia by a point to cut the deficit down to just two points before the Knights pulled away in the final period.
On the day, Mary Washington was 15-of-57 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointer's and 19 made shots from the free throw line. UMW's defense was stout all afternoon as it forced 24 turnovers, which included 13 steals, and three blocks.
Valentine led the way with 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting, while Baxter was 3-of-10, which included a 3-pointer. Valentine recorded five steals, while Baxter had four of her own.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday with a matchup against Averett in Fredericksburg, Va. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
