The University of Mary Washington women's basketball program was led by a pair of double-digit scorers in
Megan Baxter and
Jenna Steadman in its victory over Averett, 67-58, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.
Baxter led the scoring with 14 points on 3-of-10 shooting, while Steadman had 13 and a pair of 3-pointer's in the victory.
Breana Valentine contributed nine, while
Elizabeth Barry scored eight.
The Eagles jumped out to a 23-14 lead at the end of the first quarter on a 7-of-13 clip from the floor (53.9%) and five treys on nine attempts. At the end of the first half, Mary Washington led by six, 35-29, as Steadman led the way with 10 points at the break.
In the third quarter, Mary Washington began to pull away as it out-scored Averett by five points, 16-9, but the Cougars closed in and made it a three-point game with just over five minutes to play. In the end, though, the Eagles ripped off a 13-6 run to end Saturday with a victory.
All told, Mary Washington was 17-of-52 from the floor (32.7%) and 6-of-26 from deep (23.1%), while also scoring 27 points at the free throw line on 36 attempts (75%). The Cougars, meanwhile, were 21-for-46 from the floor and 2-of-8 from deep and had their last lead with 8:21 in the first quarter.
The Eagles are back in action on Monday with a matchup against Maryville in Washington D.C. at Catholic. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
