The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team was sparked by
Megan Baxter's career-high 16 points in its runaway victory over Maryville on Monday night in Washington, D.C., 63-46. Not only did Baxter shine on the offensive end, but the senior guard recorded four steals and also added a pair of rebounds and assists.
Both
Jenna Steadman and
Leila Carter reached double digits in points as Steadman scored 11, while Carter had a career-high with 10 on a 3-of-6 line from the floor.
The Eagles and Scots got off to a quick start on offense in the first quarter with 16 points each as UMW was 5-of-10 from the floor to begin the game. Mary Washington's defense was strong in the first quarter, too, forcing 10 misses on 12 attempts (16.7%) as 10 of Maryville's points came from the charity stripe.
And once UMW's foul troubles stopped, the Eagles ran away with the rest of the game. In the second quarter, Mary Washington held the Scots to just a 2-of-15 mark from the floor to take a 35-22 lead into the halftime break. Meanwhile, the Eagles went 9-for-18 from the floor, which also included a 3-pointer.
In the third quarter, the Eagles' offense slowed down -- but not by much -- on their 5-for-12 clip from the floor (41.7%), while the defense allowed the Scots to make just two of their 10 attempts. And in the fourth, UMW allowed just three total baskets on 15 attempts to come away with the victory.
All told, Mary Washington held Maryville to just a 9-of-52 mark from the floor (17.3%), while recording 10 steals, nine blocks and 28 turnovers.
Sophie Pavlech and Steadman led the way with four blocks each, while Steadman also had a pair of steals. The Eagles went 20-of-53 from the floor (37.7%) from the floor, which also included a trio of 3-pointer's. They, too, recorded 20 of their points at the free throw line.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday afternoon against Mount Saint Mary in Washington, D.C. at 2:00 p.m.
