The University of Mary Washington's women's basketball team was able to use freshman
Breana Valentine's 14 points and nine rebounds in its close 50-47 victory over Mount Saint Mary on Tuesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Valentine was 6-of-16 from the floor, which included a pair of 3-pointer's, a block, and three steals in the victory.
Leila Carter had eight for UMW off the bench on 4-of-10 shooting, while
Elizabeth Barry had seven.
The Eagles got out to a slow start on offense as they faced a 14-6 deficit at the end of the first quarter, but coming out, a switch had flipped. In the second quarter, UMW outscored the Knights by 10 points (15-5) to take a 21-19 lead into the half on 6-of-13 shooting (46.2%). The defense, meanwhile, held Mt. St. Mary to a 2-of-16 clip from the floor in the quarter.
In the third period, the Eagles then outscored the Knights by seven points and took a 39-30 lead into the final stretch of play. Mt. St. Mary was held to just a 3-for-13 mark from the floor, while Mary Washington was 7-of-16.
But in the final period, the Eagles began to falter as the Knights were as close as one point away from tying UMW with 34 seconds left. But a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds from Barry gave the Eagles their three-point advantage and the victory.
All told, UMW was 17-of-55 from the floor, which included three treys, and the defense limited to the Knights to just a 14-of-55 mark from the floor (25.5%). The Eagles, too, led the rebounding margin, 45-42, while also forcing 29 turnovers.
The Eagles are back in action on December 28 for the Guilford Holiday Tournament in Guilford, N.C. UMW will take on Berry College at 1:00 p.m.
