Kye Robinson scored a new career high with 19 points to lead three Eagles in double figures, as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Averett University, 78-44, on Thursday evening at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season.
The Cougars opened up with a run, and held an 8-4 advantage through a foul-laden opening five minutes. The Eagles bounced back with a 14-0 run, with four players scoring, including four from Robinson. The margin remained between seven and 10 through the next eight minutes, before a three pointer from freshman
Ulysses Young and a pair of Robinson free throws preceded layups from Robinson and
Kaden Bates to give the Eagles a 40-24 halftime advantage.
UMW continued where it left off in opening the second half, as a jumper from Young and steal and layup from
Jay Randall pushed the lead to 20 at 44-24. The Eagles shot 51.6% from the floor in the second (16-31), with four three pointers, in closing out the 78-44 victory.
Robinson went 7-8 from the floor, making 2-2 three point attempts and all three free throw attempts en route to 19 points. Bates reached double figures for the second time in three days, making 6-8 shots from the floor and 3-4 from the free throw line in collecting 16 points. Senior
Zack Blue added 12 as the third Eagle in double figures, and also added a team-high six rebounds.
The Eagles shot 31-57 from the floor (54.4%), making 8-20 three point tries and 8-13 free throws. Averett went 15-37 from the floor (40.5%), connecting on 5-19 three point attempts and went 9-11 from the line. The Eagles carried a 28-21 edge in rebounds, and UMW forced 22 turnovers while committing just eight.
The Eagles will return to action on December 28, when they visit DeSales University at 4:00 p.m.
