The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 65-48 decision at Virginia Wesleyan University in the Townebank Tipoff Tournament championship on Saurday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 1-1 on the season.
One day after a red-hot shooting performance, the Eagles struggled in the opening 20 minutes, connecting for 8-24 from the field with just one three pointer. The Eagle defense also limited the hosts, as the score stood at 29-20 at halftime.
In the second, the defensive effort on both sides continued to reign, as the Marlins edged the Eagles, 36-28.Â
Freshman
Kye Robinson led the Eagles as the lone player in double figures, scoring 10 points, while freshman
Ulysses Young added nine. Robinson also led with 11 rebounds, while sophomore
Jay Randall led the way with four steals.
UMW shot 34% from the field (17-50), making 3-18 three point attempts and 11-20 free throws. Virginia Wesleyan shot 40% (20-50), making 8-25 three point tries and 17-27 free throws. The Marlins held a 39-35 rebounding edge, and UMW's bench outscored the Marlins, 30-6.
The Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they face Maryville College at the Marietta College Tipoff Tournament at 6:00 p.m.
