The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team made its 2024-25 season debut on Friday night, falling to Bridgewater in Harrisonburg, Va. in the Route 42 Hoops Classic, 58-31.
The Eagles were led by
Adeline Riner's nine points on 4-of-10 shooting, while
Breana Valentine had six -- which included a 3-pointer -- in her collegiate debut.
Juliona Mabie also had four points in her debut with UMW.
At the end of the first quarter, UMW was tied with Bridgewater at 10 points apiece before Bridgewater took a 21-15 lead into the half. In the following half, Mary Washington mustered 16 points, while Brigewater had 37 to pull away with the win.
UMW shot 12-of-55 from the field (2-of-15 from deep), while Bridgewater went 25-of-61 and 4-of-10 from deep. On the boards, Bridgewater recorded 47 boards, while UMW had 37.
On the defensive end, Mary Washington's
Megan Baxter,
Meredith Smith, and
Maddy Jenisch each recorded a block, while
Sophie Pavlech,
Jenna Steadman (two),
McKenna Huff, Janay Rissmiller,
Leila Carter, Riner and Smith all recorded a steal each.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. to conclude the Route 42 Hoops Classic against Eastern Mennonite in Harrisonburg, Va.
