The University of Mary Washington field hockey team erupted for five first half goals and blanked opposing Centre College in a 6-0 victory over the Colonels in the semifinal round of the inaugural Collegiate Field Hockey Conference tournament in Sewanee, Tenn., on Friday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 12-7 on the season.
All-conference senior
Emma Bernard opened the scoring for UMW, scoring on a
Monique Lipton assist a 6:53 into the first quarter. Fellow senior
Ellie Helbling upped the margin to 2-0 at 12:52, and the Eagles carried a 2-0 lead to the second quarter.
Bernard revisited the scoring column at 18:48, and then posted her third of the day at 22:12, on an assist from junior
Ashley Coleman. All-conference sophomore
Mackenzie Proffitt added the Eagles' fifth score at 29:42, as UMW led comfortably, 5-0, at halftime.
Conference Offensive Player of the Year
Grayson Scott opened the third quarter with her first goal of the game, and the Eagle defense kept the cage clean throughout in the 6-0 victory.
The Eagles led in shots, 13-6, as well as penalty corners, 5-3. UMW goalies
Tori Winans (37 minutes),
Erin Roy (19 minutes), and
Brooke Martin (five minutes) combined for the shutout without recording a save.
UMW will face top-seeded Rhodes College on Sunday at noon Eastern time for the CFHC tournament championship. Rhodes defeated the Eagles, 2-1, in double overtime in their regular season encounter.
