Junior forward
Grayson Scott netted a career-high four goals in leading the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 6-4 victory over Rhodes College in the inaugural Collegiate Field Hockey Conference championship on Sunday afternoon in Sewanee, Tennessee. The Eagles improve to 13-7 on the season.
Rhodes wasted no time in starting the scoring, scoring on a penalty stroke just 52 seconds into the game. The Eagles answered quickly, as Scott netted her first of the day at 1:48, and Scott then put the Eagles ahead to stay on an assist from
Emma Bernard at 4:36.
The scoring flurry wasn't finished, however, as Bernard caged another goal just 23 seconds later on a breakaway.
UMW added another in the second quarter on Scott's third of the day at 22:14, and the Eagles led, 4-1, at halftime.
The Eagles picked back up where they left off in the third, as Scott scored her fourth of the day at 34:46 on a
Monique Lipton assist. UMW added another at 44:34, as sophomore
Mackenzie Proffitt scored successfully on a penalty stroke.
The Eagles led in shots, 30-18, and had 11 penalty corners to eight for the Lynx. UMW goalkeeper
Tori Winans made three saves in 44 minutes, and
Erin Roy added three in 16 minutes of relief.
The Eagles will await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament, to be played beginning Wednesday, on Sunday night.
