Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#1 UMW Men's Soccer Survives Salisbury in C2C Semifinal in PK Shootout

After 110 minutes of play deadlocked at 1-1 with Salisbury University, the top seeded and number one ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team advanced with a 5-4 edge in seven rounds of a penalty kick shootout in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Confrence tournament semifinal round on Friday at the Battleground. The Eagles move to 16-1-2 overall, and advance to Sunday's C2C Championship.

As was the case two weeks ago when the same two teams clashed at the Eagles' Homecoming, Salisbury jumped ahead with the first goal of the contest, this time in the 35th minute on a booted shot that deflected midway to the goal and into the right side of the net. And as was the case two weeks ago, the Sea Gulls carried a one-goal lead to halftime.

The Eagles drew even in the 68th minute, as junior Sammy Amorose scored from the top of the penalty area, on passes from Carter Berg and Michael Lenhard, and the game remained tied through regulation and two ten-minute overtime periods.

In the penalty kick shootout, the Eagles kicked first, and took a 2-1 lead with successful tries from seniors Gabe Francesconi and Nelsar Castillo. Salisbury made one of its next two attempts while the Eagles missed a pair to tie the score at 2-2. After Diego Guzman connected on UMW's fifth try, Salisbury answered, sending the shootout to sudden death after being tied after five kickers.

Senior Juan Vargas was successful on his try, and the Sea Gulls answered again to move the proceedings to round seven. Senior Jordy Santana scored his attempt before Salisbury's tying attempt sailed over the crossbar, giving the Eagles their eighth straight advancement to the conference championship game, dating back to 2016.

UMW led in shots, 27-12, as well as corner kicks, 10-5. UMW senior goalkeeper Freddy Rogers made four saves, as well as one stop in the shootout.

The Eagles will take on second-seeded Christopher Newport University, who defeated #3 UC Santa Cruz, 2-1, on Sunday at noon for the conference championship.
