The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team won its third consecutive Coast-to-Coast Conference championship with a 3-2 overtime victory over Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. on Sunday afternoon. The victory marked the 13th title in program history as well.
The Eagles and Captains stood tied after a CNU goal with just over a minute left evened the score at two apiece. But it didn't take long for the Eagles to claim the victory as
Aidan Shell and
Jordy Santana teamed up to feed the ball to
Carter Berg, who netted the game-winner less than three minutes into overtime.
But how did UMW get there? Well, it began with CNU's score in the 27th minute that put the Captains up by a goal, but it was Berg who found the back of the net less than a minute later for the equalizer.
Nelsar Castillo found Berg right in front of the keeper as Berg's right foot placed the ball into the back of the net.
Early on in the second half,
Sammy Amorose found
Joel Albritton, who netted the Eagles second goal and put UMW up, 2-1 in the 47th minute.
But after 42 minutes of physical, back-and-forth play, CNU netted the equalizer in the 89th minute on a corner kick that found a head, which ended up in the back of the UMW goal.
UMW, though, didn't let it deter it from a third-straight as Berg netted the game winner just over two minutes into overtime for the 3-2 victory.
With the win, UMW improved to 17-1-2 as it outshot the Captains, 15-12, and had nine shots on goal. The Eagles, too, led in corner kicks, 9-4.
