Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rissmiller Nets Career High as UMW Women's Basketball Downs NC Wesleyan, 73-66

It was a big night for first year guard Janay Rissmiller, who scored a career-high 12 points in the University of Mary Washington's women's basketball's victory over NC Wesleyan, 73-66, on Wednesday night in Fredericksburg, Va.

For Rissmiller, she netted those 12 points on a 4-of-5 clip from the field, which also included a pair of 3-pointer's. She got after it on defense, too, with four steals, a block and four rebounds.

Not a lot went wrong for UMW as a team as Sophie Pavlech netted a season-high 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and a pair of 3-pointer's. Breana Valentine also scored 10 points for the Eagles, which included a trey.

In a physical first quarter that saw a combined 17 fouls, the Eagles and Battling Bishops were tied up at 20 as UMW was 6-of-23 from the floor, but was saved by 10 free throw attempts, converting seven of them.

But in the second quarter, the offense and defense came together as one for Mary Washington, who scored 23 points compared to NC Wesleyan's eight. To end the first half, UMW was 16-of-39 from the floor with three 3-pointer's as it took a 43-28 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, though, NC Wesleyan started to claw back as it out-scored UMW by a point, 14-13, as Mary Washington was 5-of-15 from the floor. And in the final quarter, the Battling Bishops made a late push as they scored 24 points, compared to UMW's 17. But in the end, it was enough for the Eagles to prevail as they claimed their third victory of the season.

All told, Mary Washington was 23-for-61 (37.7%) from the floor, but 6-for-14 (42.9%) from deep in the win. The Eagles recorded four blocks and eighteen steals on 30 NC Wesleyan turnovers. Valentine led the way with six steals on defense, while Pavlech had three.

The Eagles are back in action next Tuesday with a matchup against Roanoke College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
