UMW Women's Soccer Battles #18 Johns Hopkins Late In 4-3 Loss

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team battled No. 18 Johns Hopkins to a close 4-3 loss on Saturday night in Baltimore, Md.

The Eagles found themselves with a 3-2 lead in the 79th minute before Hopkins scored twice in the final 10 minutes to come away with the victory.

In the first half, UMW trailed by a goal in the 36th minute when Layla Royster's right foot connected with the ball to beat the Blue Jays' keeper to tie the score at one. It marked Royster's first career goal for Mary Washington.

Going into the break, UMW trailed in shots, 8-5, but keeper Adriana Thompson recorded four saves on eight total shots.

In the second half, both teams' offenses broke out in a big way as the Eagles jumped out to 3-2 lead in the 71st minute.

Hopkins scored in the 50th minute to take a 2-1 lead but it was UMW who battled back to take 3-2 lead. Emily Box tied the game with her third goal of the season in the 66th minute before Naomi Knight scored her first career goal in the 71st minute to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

But, in the end, Johns Hopkins would squeak by with a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes.

All told, Hopkins led in shots (21-8) and shots-on-goal (12-5), but UMW made the most of its chances, scoring three times on its eight shots.

The Eagles wrapped up the regular season 9-5-4 and will learn where they are seeded for the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament on Monday morning as they prepare to travel out to Santa Cruz, Calif. for the C2C Tournament next weekend.
