Despite a late push at a comeback, the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team fell to Santa Cruz, 3-2, on Friday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Ca. in the Coast-to-Coast Conference Semifinal. With the loss, UMW fell to 9-6-4 this season.
The Eagles and Banana Slugs battled in a scoreless contest for the first 43 minute of the match before Santa Cruz struck first just before halftime, taking a 1-0 lead into the break. In the first half, the Eagles took three shots compared to Santa Cruz's seven as keeper
Adriana Thompson was able to save a pair of shots.
In the second half, though, the Eagles scored twice in their comeback attempt. But UCSC got on the board first to increase their lead to two goals when it found the back of the net early in the first half in the 54th minute. UMW, though, didn't go quietly as
Natalie Anderson cut the deficit in half with her second goal of the season, 2-1.
But Santa Cruz then reclaimed its two goal lead just four minutes after Anderson's strike. Just before the final horn sounded, though,
Ellen Shine scored with just under a minute to play, giving UMW one last attempt at a late comeback.
In the end, though, the final goal never came for Mary Washington, who now will wait to see if it continues its season in the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday afternoon.
All told, Santa Cruz led in shots, 11-7, but of those seven shots for UMW, six were on goal. Santa Cruz, too, held a slight edge in corners, 2-1.
