Though the defensive unit put forth a valiant battle, the University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision at sixth-ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday evening in Newport News, Va. The Eagles close the regular season wih a record of 11-7.

UMW sophomore goalkeeper Tori Winans turned in a banner day for the Eagles, helping to keep the game scoreless, despite a great disparity in shots, into the second quarter. The hosts would score in the 21st minute, and added single goals in the third and fourth quarter for the final margin.

Christopher Newport led in shots, 39-4, as well as penalty corners, 13-4. Winans made 19 saves on the day, a new career high that shattered her previous high mark of 10 set earlier this season against Lynchburg.

The Eagles will next play next weekend at the Collegiate Field Hockey Conference Tournament in Sewanee, Tennessee.
