The No. 1 University of Mary Washington men's soccer team is advancing to its third consecutive Sweet Sixteen as the Eagles took down Ohio Wesleyan with a goal in the final two minutes of the match, 1-0, in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles got their advantage from
Jordy Santana's score in the final 160 seconds of the match as he was on the receiving end of a pass from
Joel Albritton, that was quickly touched out to Santana by
Carter Berg.
Even though UMW only scored once, it had applied offensive pressure on the Battling Bishops for the entirety of the contest. In the first half, UMW accounted for 15 shots, with eight of them on net. The defense countered any Bishop attack well as OWU only had one shot attempt in the first half.
And in the second half, the Eagles' offensive pressure continued to mount as they sent 13 more shots towards the net, with six that were on goal. But it was the final shot of the afternoon that gave UMW the victory when Santana's right foot connected with the ball, finding the back of the net.
All told, UMW led in shots, 28-14, and shots on goal with 14 compared to OWU's three. On corners, UMW controlled that as well, 13-2.
Freddy Rogers recorded his 18th victory of the season to run the Eagles' record to 18-1-2 (18-0-2 against Div. III opponents). Rogers, too, made three saves in the win.
The Eagles are back in action for their Sweet Sixteen matchup on Saturday with the winner heading into the Elite Eight. More details about the Eagles' oppoenent and location will be learned on Sunday night when the NCAA Tournament committee meets.
