The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team saw its historic 2024 season come to a close in its 1-0 overtime loss to Denison on Saturday afternoon in the third round of the Men's Soccer NCAA Championships in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles fell in the 105th minute on a golden goal that found the back of the net -- ending the Eagles' unbeaten streak of 21 games against NCAA Div. III opponents. Too, it's the first time UMW has been shutout since its 1-0 loss against Washington in the Sweet 16 a season ago.
The game was scoreless at halftime with the Eagles outshooting the Big Red, 6-4, and it was also goal-less heading into overtime as Mary Washington and Denison tied in shots 4-4 in a very even split to that point. In the first overtime period, the Big Red staved off a pair of UMW tries, which included a save from Denison's keeper.
In the second overtime period, though, Rogers recorded a save on the Big Red's first attempt before Denison was able to find the back of the net in the 105th minute.
All told, UMW outshot Denison, 12-10, but the Big Red had more shots-on-goal, 7-6. Too, Denison led in corners, 7-3.
The Eagles conclude the 2024 season officially 19-2-2 with its lone other loss coming to the University of Virginia (Div. I).Â
