The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team had no trouble in its rout of Methodist on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va., 67-42.
The Eagles and Monarchs were in a close battle early as the first quarter ended in a one-point lead for UMW, 15-14. But in the second quarter, UMW's defense turned to another level as the Eagles limited Methodist to just five points, while scoring 18 of their own and taking a 33-19 lead into the break.
And in the second half, it was all Mary Washington once again as the Eagles outscored Methodist by eight in the third quarter, then by three in the final period to come away with a 67-42 victory.
Rileigh Weaver scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting off the bench for the Eagles, providing a spark plug. Meanwhile,
Juliona Mabie scored 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting, while
Megan Baxter added another 13 on a 4-for-8 clip.
All told, UMW shot 23-of--59 from the field (39%) and finished off a trio of 3-pointers, while also adding 14 points on free throws. On the defensive end, Mary Washington limited the Monarchs to just a 17-of-53 day from the field (32.1%), while allowing Methodist to make just one of 12 3-point attempts.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday against Meredith in Virginia Beach, Va. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
