Using a second half goal from junior defender
Natalie Anderson, the University of Mary Washington's women's soccer team took down No. 24 McDaniel, 1-0, in Westminster, Md. on Wednesday evening.
The victory was the Eagles' first Top 25 win since taking down then-No. 7 Christopher Newport in the 2019 CAC semifinal, 1-0.
Mary Washington (6-3-3) has now boasted four consecutive shutouts with
Morgan Hicok having a hand in each of them. The senior keeper has started and completed each of the last three games entering Wednesday and played the first half, recording one save.
In the first half, UMW took three shots, though none of them found the back of the net -- three of the Eagles' shots were on goal, however. In the second half, Hicok came out and in came
Adriana Thompson in goal, who recorded a pair of saves on McDaniel's five shots.
In the 59th minute, Mary Washington finally broke through with the only goal of the afternoon as Anderson struck to give the Eagles the lead. From there, UMW never looked back as it move to 6-3-3 this season.
All told, McDaniel led in shots 8-4, while UMW led in shots on goal (5-4). On corner kicks, Mary Washington also took control with four compared to McDainel's two.
The Eagles are back in action with a second Top 25 matchup this week as they welcome No. 3 Christopher Newport to town on Saturday. First touch in Fredericksburg is set for 1:00 p.m.
