The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team couldn't take home its second Top 25 victory of the week, falling to No. 3 Christopher Newport, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.
Saturday's contest was a physical one as the Eagles held strong, drawing seven fouls in the first half. Junior defender
Natalie Anderson recorded a few sliding tackles, shutting out multiple CNU offensive looks early on.
The Captains, though, eventually broke through on the scoreboard as they scored in the 29th minute as the Eagles trailed heading into the break, 1-0. In the second half, it was a rebounded penalty shot that landed CNU its second goal.
Mary Washington took one shot in the first half, one in the second -- two total -- as
Cassidy Shaw recorded the Eagles' lone shot-on-goal. The Captains had come in off a 5-0 victory in which they took 30 shots, on Saturday, though, the UMW defense limited the CNU offense to just nine total shots.
Junior keeper Adrianna Thompson recorded four saves on the Captains six shots-on-goal. CNU also led in corner kicks, 9-0.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday with a matchup at Salisbury. First touch is set for 12:00 p.m.
