Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 1 UMW Men's Soccer Scores Late to Beat Stevenson, 1-0

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer took down Stevenson in a 1-0 thriller, using an 89th minute goal to push past the Mustangs on Wednesday night in Stevenson, Md.

It was Carter Berg who scored the game's lone goal into the bottom left corner of the net, and with the goal it pushed UMW's unbeaten record to 12-0-1 this season -- the most wins in NCAA Div. III soccer this season.

The Eagles, like they do most of the time, controlled the pace of play in the first half with 10 shots compared to Stevenson's two of shots. Of the 10 shots, four of them were on goal, but UMW had no goals to show for it, taking a scoreless tie into the half.

In the second half, Mary Washington came out firing once again, shooting the ball 23 times -- 10 of which were on goal -- before finding the back of the net with Berg's goal with 110 seconds to play, a goal assisted by Joel Albritton.

Sammy Amorose took a team-leading 11 shots (three on goal), Nelsar Castillo took five (two on goal), Diego Guzman had four (two on goal), Berg took three (two on goal), Albritton had three as well (one on goal), Francesconi had two shots (both on goal), Julian Schmugge also took two. Aidan Shell, Jordy Santana, and Jared Dubose all took one shot each.

Keeper Freddy Rogers and the backline of Nathan Macek, Nate Terrell, and Aidan Shell faced just four shots, recording one save on a lone shot-on-goal. Rogers recorded his 31st career victory between the pipes for the Eagles and his 10th career shutout.

All told, Mary Washington led in shots (33-4), shots on goal (14-1), and corner kicks (10-0).

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday for a matchup with Christopher Newport (RV) at the Soccer Stadium. First touch is set for 3:30 p.m.
