The No. 1 University of Mary Washington men's soccer team had no issues taking down Christopher Newport in a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles bumped their record to 13-0-1 with the victory, likely keeping them atop of the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll that releases on Tuesday.
UMW scored its lone goal in the last eight seconds before halftime hit as
Diego Guzman drew a penalty in the box, forcing an Eagles' penalty kick.
Guzman converted with just seconds remaining before the half, putting Mary Washington up, 1-0, as the halftime buzzer sounded.
In the second half, the Eagles' offense was a little more conservative as it recorded just two shots compared to the 10 it took in the first half. The backline and keeper
Freddy Rogers forced missed shots on all of CNU's attempts as Rogers left Saturday with five total saves and his fifth shutout of the season.
All told, the Eagles took 12 shots, compared to the Captains' 16 shots. UMW had three shots on goal, while CNU had five of its own. The Eagles, though, led in corner kicks, 8-5.
Mary Washington is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at N.C. Wesleyan. First touch is set for 4:00 p.m.
