Grayson Scott scored a hat trick and the defensive unit limited opportunities as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Centre College, 5-0, on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-4 overall, and 3-0 in Collegiate Field Hockey Conference action.
Scott opened the scoring at 7:57 into the game, on an assist from senior
Paige Stewart. The game remained at 1-0 through the end of the first and the entirety of the second quarter.
The Eagle offense came alive in the third, as Scott scored her second of the day off a loose ball on a saved shot at 32:07. Sophomore
Anna Reed scored her first goal of the season at 37:29 on an assist from
Makenzie Tutone, turning with Tutone's pass in the circle and beating the goalie. Scott capped her hat trick on a give-and-go with
Emma Bernard, who claimed the assist at 42:09.
In the fourth, the Eagles added an insurance tally at 49:15, as junior
Kalani Moore scored her second of the season, hitting in a rebound off the keeper's pads.Â
The Eagles led in shots, 21-7, as well as penalty corners, 13-6. Junior
Tori Winans turned in three shutout quarters in goal without a save, and junior
Erin Roy added a pair of saves to preserve the shutout in the fourth.
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, when they visit St. Mary's College of MD at 6:00 p.m., in a battle of former conference foes.
