The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team has run its season-opening unbeaten streak to 12 games as the Eagles downed Salisbury on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, Md., 4-0.
The Eagles improved to 11-0-1 this season as
Sammy Amorose scored twice to increase his team-lead in goals to 10 this season, while
Julian Schmugge scored in his second consecutive game, while
Diego Guzman added his second goal in his last three games to close Saturday out.
Mary Washington got an early score from Amorose, who scored in the 15th minute off of a feed from
Carter Berg to put the Eagles up, 1-0. Two minutes later,
Gabe Francesconi found Schmugge open, who found the back of the net to double UMW's lead, 2-0.
Then, to close out the high-scoring first half, Amorose netted his 10th goal of the season off of a feed from
Jordy Santana in the 36th minute that put UMW up, 3-0. In the first half, of the seven shots the Eagles took, five of them were on net. UMW keeper
Freddy Rogers recorded a save on the seven shots the Sea Gulls fired off in the first half.Â
In the second half, the Eagles wouldn't score again until the 89th minute when Guzman scored by himself, but the score did increase Mary Washington's lead to four, 4-0, to cap Sunday's action.
UMW took 21 total shots -- 12 of which were on goal -- while Salisbury took 11 shots, four of which were on net. Salisbury, though, led in corner kicks, 7-6.
Rogers recorded his 29th victory in an Eagles uniform on Saturday, running his record over the last two seasons to 29-2-3. Rogers, too, added four saves to his season total.
The Eagles are back in action against Stevenson on Wednesday night in Stevenson, Md. First touch is set for 6:00 p.m.
