The University of Mary Washington men's soccer (15-1-1) clawed back in a road contest against the University of Virginia late in the second half before falling, 4-2, to the Cavaliers on Wednesday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.
The Eagles fell behind by three goals in the first half, despite outshooting UVA, 6-5. The early portion of the match was scoreless until the 24' mark when the Eagles allowed an own-goal. Then, the Cavaliers scored in the 38th minute and again in the 41st minute.
Not deterred at the deficit, however, the Eagles scored twice in the second half to pull within a goal before Virginia iced the match with its final goal in the 80th minute.
Jared Dubose and
Sammy Amorose found themselves on a breakaway in the 52nd minute after a UVa turnover. Amorose sprinted behind two defenders before finding Dubose in the middle of the box as Dubose's right foot connected with the ball and beat the keeper.
Then, in the 72nd minute, the Eagles drew a foul in the box which set up
Carter Berg with a chance to cut into the 3-1 deficit with a penalty kick. Berg's right foot also beat the keeper on the penalty shot, which only gave UVa a one-goal advantage, 3-2.
Virginia then scored in the 80th minute on a penalty kick to ice the victory.
Mary Washington trailed closely in shots, 13-12, and shots on net, 5-4. UMW also had a pair of corner kicks as well, while the Hoos had five themselves.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. to round out the regular season, then return home the following weekend to host the Coast-to-Coast Conference championships.
