UMW Women's Soccer Blanks Franklin & Marshall, 2-0, For Homecoming Win

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team used a goal in each half to defeat Franklin & Marshall College, 2-0, for a Homecoming win on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles, winners of three straight, improve to 9-4-3 on the season, and run their shutout streak to three straight games.

Mary Washington applied pressure early, and that pressure led to a penalty kick score from senior Eliza Franklin at 6:42, giving the Eagles an early advantage. The tightly contested game continued throughout the half, with both sides using strong defense to limit opportunities, and the Eagles held the 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second, the strong defensive and midfield play continued, as neither side could provide many offensive challenges. The Eagles broke through with an insurance score at 88:19, as sophomore Ellen Shine netted her second goal of the season on a Franklin assist.

In all, the Eagles led in shots, 11-7, while F&M held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior Eagle goalkeeper Adriana Thompson made a pair of saves on the day in gaining the shutout win.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Catholic University at 7:00 p.m.
