Senior forward
Ellie Helbling scored the tying goal in the fourth quarter, and junior
Monique Lipton added a pair of assists as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team overcame a 1-0 deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Catholic University, 4-2, on Wednesday night at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-4 on the season.
After a scoreless first quarter in which teams each took three shots, a Catholic player was upended in the circle, leading to a successful penalty stroke in the 23rd minute. From there, the score remained with the Eagles trailing by one until 53 seconds into the fourth quarter, when Helbling took a pass from Lipton on the right, and hit a one-timer into the goal to knot the score.Â
That tally energized the Eagles, as senior
Paige Stewart put the Eagles ahead to stay just six minutes later on another Lipton pass, and senior
Emma Bernard added a pair of insurance scores, with 4:23 and 2:43 left. Catholic scored on its second penalty shot of the night after the clock hit zero.
The Eagles led in shots, 16-10, as well as penalty corners, 10-6. UMW goalkeeper Tori WInans made eight saves for the Eagles.
UMW will be back in action on Sunday when the Eagles host Centre College in CFHC action starting at 11:00 a.m.
