UMW Baseball Splits Saturday Twinbill at Wilson College

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Wilson College, dropping the opener, 6-5, and winning the second, 14-3. The Eagles move to 16-17 on the season.

In the opener, Wilson jumped ahead with two runs in the first and one in the second. The Eagles tied the score with three in the third, as Jacob Christenbury and Bobby Ayscue each doubled to produce one run, and, with the bases loaded, Xavier Herring hit a two-run single. UMW went ahead with a run in the fourth, as Burke Steifman doubled and scored on a Bobby Ayscue single.

Wilson tied the score in the seventh, and the Eagles went ahead in the ninth on a home run from Owen Reilly. Wilson scored two in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

Ayscue had two singles and a double and Herring singled three times to lead the Eagle offense, while Noah Roots, Steifman, and Christenbury doubled.

Justin Ritz started for the Eagles, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings, with four walks and four strikeouts. Garrett O'Connor took the loss, allowing a run in the ninth.

In the second game, the Eagle bats erupted for 14 runs in a 14-3 win. UMW scored five in the first, Ayscue scored on a fielder's choice, Herring hit a two-run triple, Luke Guerzon drove in a run with a double, and Tim Blankenship provided an RBI single.

UMW scored one in the second as Ayscue walked and scored on a wild pitch, before Wilson scored three in their half of the inning. UMW pulled away late, with three in the fifth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh. Christenbury hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth before Ayscue hit a home run. In the sixth, Blankenship and Christenbury each added RBI singles. The seventh brought runs on a two-run triple from Ty Lowe and a sacrifice fly from Sam Freeborne.

Lowe had two singles and a triple, while Blankenship singled twice and doubled. Jonathan Sedmak, Herring and Guerzon each hit a single and double, and Ayscue homered and singled.

Lowe scored the win on the mound, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six innings, with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday at Christopher Newport for a noon doubleheader.
