Balanced Attack Leads UMW Past Randolph College, 96-83, on Saturday Night in the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament

Six players from UMW scored double digits to beat visiting Randolph College 96-83 on Saturday Night in the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament. The Eagles are 2-0 on the season.

Eric Shaw got the game started with a three pointer and then a made layup to put the Eagles up 5-2. Drew Johnson nailed a three pointer to up the lead 11-5 with 16:19 left in the 1st half. From there, the Eagles went on a 9-3 run with two three pointers from A.J. Robinson and one from Johnson to stretch the lead out to 20-10. 

Both teams traded basket for the next couple of minutes and the Eagles were up 26-17 with 11:34 left on a Khiorie Stewart layup. The Wildcats then went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:06 to take the lead at 27-26. UMW responded and regained the lead 40-35 on a Jacob Williams jump shot with 2:38 left in the 1st half. UMW closed out the half and had a 44-40 lead. A.J. Robinson led the Eagles with 10 points in the first half.

Randolph College came out of the 2nd half on fire as they scored 10 straight points to take a 50-44 lead. The Eagles kept it close and evened the score at 64-64 on a Shaw layup with 12:26 left in the second half. Randolph College then pushed the lead to 71-66 but Stewart and Williams would combine to go on a 5-0 run to even the score 71 a piece with 10:02 remaining. 

The Eagles would go ahead 77-76 on a Stewart layup with 6:35 left and would never look back from there. Late free throws and a couple of Shaw dunks would seal the game for the Eagles as they would go on to win 96-83.

Stewart led the Eagles with 21 points, Williams scored 18. Shaw finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Johnson and Robinson chipped in 12 points a piece. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Fields who scored 22 points.  

The Eagles shot 52.3% (34-65) from the field, making 12-30 three pointers and 16-21 free throws. Randolph shot 56.6% (30-53) from the field, making 10-19 three pointers and 13-20 free throws. 

UMW will host Denison College on Sunday afternoon in the championship of the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament at 3 p.m.
