#24 UMW Volleyball Tops Va. Wesleyan, 3-1, on Wednesday Night to Improve to 6-0

Sophomore Leslie Walters scored 13 kills and junior Rachel Hendricks added 10 to lead the 24th ranked University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday at Ron Rosner Arena. Game scores were 25-10, 25-27, 25-10, 27-25.

The Eagles seized control early in game one, running out to a 4-0 lead. UMW seized opportunities from attack errors from the Marlins to build the lead to 9-2, and then 13-4. The Eagles scored five straight with Walters serving to lead 19-6, and then four more with freshman Savannah Powers serving, and held on for a 25-10 win.

In the second, the Marlins forged ahead early, 6-2, and led, 10-7, before three straight UMW points tied the score at 10. VWC scored five of the next six points to grab a 15-11 advantage, but the Eagles scored three straight to cut the margin to 15-14. The Marlins led, 23-19, before another comeback saw the game tied at 25-25. From the the guests netted two straight to take the game, 27-25.

Game three was all UMW early, as the Eagles jumped out to a 9-1 lead. Five straight points gave UMW a 19-6 advantage, and the teams alternated points the rest of the way in a 25-10 win for the home side.

In the fourth, the Eagles used a 5-1 run to start the game, but the Marlins stormed back to take an 8-7 advantage. The Eagles briefly regained the lead at 14-13, and again at 15-14, but then went on a run that saw VWC come as close as one at 22-21. Three points from the Marlins gave them a 24-23 lead, but kills from Walters, Powers, and senior Emma Olson gave the game and match to UMW.

Walters had 13 kills against two errors in 26 attempts, while Hendricks added 10 kills against five errors. Powers and freshman Rachel Voketaitis each seven kills as well. Olson racked up eight kills, 14 digs, and 40 assists. Jenna Yost led UMW with 16 digs.

The Eagles will return to action next Wednesday when they visit Catholic University at 7:00 p.m.
