#29 UMW Baseball Tops NC Wesleyan, 11-9, in Monday Action; Improves to 8-0

The 29th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team pounded out 18 hits in defeating North Carolina Wesleyan College, 11-9, in 10 innings on Monday in Rocky Mount. The Eagles improve to 8-0 on the season.

After the Bishops scored an unearned run to start the scoring in the second, the Eagles tied the score on a James Keller home run in the third.  Mitch Moynihan plated Cody Beacorn with a double, and came around to score on a David Slupek triple.

NC Wesleyan scored once in the third to trim the deficit to 3-2, but the Eagles answered with a run in the fourth on a Jose Moreno groundout to score Stephen Johnston. The Bishops tied the game in the fourth with a pair of runs.

The Eagles scored three runs in the fifth, as Beacorn, James Sink, and Johnston provided RBI singles, giving UMW a 7-5 cushion. The Bishops scored a pair in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-6, but UMW gained a pair of runs in the ninth on a two-run single from Moynihan.

NC Wesleyan, down to their last out, came up with a single, double, and home run in the ninth to knot the score at 9-9. In the tenth, the Eagles loaded the bases with walks to Brian Burns, James Keller, and Kyle Bynum, before Moynihan provided a two run single.

The Bishops were unable to tie the score in the tenth, giving the Eagles their eighth straight win.

Keller homered, singled, and doubled, scoring four runs, while Beacorn had three hits and two runs scored. Moynihan had a double and two singles and four RBI, while Johnston had three hits and Burns, Slupek, and Sink each added two.

Junior Erik Jorgensen gained the win in relief, allowing three runs in two innings, striking out four.  Joe Thompson allowed two earned runs in four innings, followed by two scoreless innings from Paul McClure and a scoreless 1.1 innings from Hank Biggs.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on Johnson & Wales at 1:00 p.m. in Myrtle Beach.
