The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to visiting North Carolina Wesleyan College in 11 innings on Tuesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles fall to 16-9 on the season.
The Bishops opened the game by scoring single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings, and led, 5-0, in the middle of the seventh inning. But the Eagles responded with two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, and two more in the ninth to tie the game at five and send the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, UMW had a golden chance to win, with runners on second and third and no outs, but were unable to plate the go-ahead run. The Bishops scored in the 11th on a single to right field and held on in the 11th.
Freshman
Mitchell Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio, Notre Dame Latin) and junior
Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach) each led UMW with three hits, while
Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac),
Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley), and
Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) each had two hits. In the game, the two teams combined to use 39 players, with UMW playing 20.
Senior
Parker Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va., Cape Henry Collegiate) pitched seven innings for UMW, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. He was followed by freshman
Ben Sisk (Chesterfield, Va., Cosby), who allowed just one hit in two innings, and
Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha), who allowed the unearned game winning run on four hits in two innings.
Mary Washington will return to action on Thursday when they host Capital Athletic Conference foe York College at 3:30 p.m.
