Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Royle's OT Score Lifts #25 UMW Field Hockey Past Randolph-Macon, 3-2

Senior midfielder Katie Royle caged the game winning goal with 4:25 remaining in the first overtime period in leading the 25th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season.

The Eagles never held the lead during regulation, in an entertaining end-to-end contest. Randolph-Macon opened the scoring just 6:22 into play, but the Eagles responded with a penalty stroke from senior Hannah Jadgchew just 36 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1.

The Yellow Jackets went back ahead in the second with a tally with 8:20 remaining before halftime. Freshman Addison Beamer scored on a redirect of a Mackenzie Proffitt blast 3:09 later, and the score would stay tied at 2-2 through halftime and the ensuing 30 minutes, but not without several strong chances on each end. Randolph-Macon had a penalty stroke hit the goalpost, and the Eagles scored an apparent go-ahead goal on a penalty corner that was disallowed.

RMC had a chance in the fourth quarter with a one-on-one with goalkeeper Tori WInans, but Winans made a great save to preserve the tie. Senior defender Elizabeth Stribling also made two defensive saves - one early and one late - to keep the game knotted.

Royle scored the game winner after dribbling into the circle from the top at 65:35.

Each team had 16 shots on the day. UMW led in penalty corners, 5-2. Winans made seven saves in addition to Stribling's pair of defensive saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on October 10, when they open Collegiate Field Hockey Conference play at Rhodes College at noon.
