The University of Mary Washington baseball team (RV) used two home runs each from
Ryan Henson,
Connor Hassan, and
Eric Powell to take down Lycoming on Sunday in a pair of victories.
Game 1 - Eagles win, 8-4.
In the first game on Sunday, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to
Benjamin Rossi's RBI single, then Henson followed with a sac fly soon after to extend the lead to 2-0. Lycoming took a 4-2 in the fifth after a four-run inning. The Eagles cut into the gap by a run with a solo home run from Powell, his first of the day, in the sixth, 4-3. And heading into the ninth, UMW used a five-run inning to steal another victory.
After
William Tuttle reached with a single, Henson followed with his first homer of the day to give UMW a 5-4 lead in the ninth. Then, with an out,
George Rizzo followed with a single, then
Oliver Martin was hit by a pitch before Hassan smoked his first home run of the day -- a three-run shot to extend the lead to 8-4.
Gavin Riley went the distance for UMW as he tossed all nine innings in the victory -- his seventh of the year. His only blemish was the grand slam he yielded in the fifth, other than that he was just about untouchable. Working around six hits and three walks, Riley struck out five batters en route to the victory.
Game 2 - Eagles win, 11-3.
Lycoming got on the board early as it scored a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles didn't put up a run until the sixth when Hassan hit his second home run of the day to tie the game at one apiece.
But then, UMW exploded for eight runs in the seventh that began like this: Henson and Rossi both reached on errors to open the inning, followed by
Henry Britt's hit by pitch to load the bases.
Gavin Cunningham followed with a pinch-hit single that gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead. With the bases still loaded and an out, Tuttle lifted a fly ball that scored a run to extend the lead to 3-1.
Hassan followed with an RBI single to tack another run on to the lead, 4-1. Then
Collin Clarkson roped a two-RBI double that added another pair of runs to the lead, 6-1. Powell worked a walk before Henson hit his second homer of the day (and fourth of the week) to extend to 9-1.
And in the ninth, Powell smacked his second home run of the day after Hassan was hit by a pitch to add another two runs on to the Eagles lead, 11-3.
Matthew Boyd went 6.2 innings, yielding three runs (two earned), while working around nine hits and a walk, while striking out six batters.
Jake Herbst,
Matthew Caldwell, and
Reece Hamilton worked the final 10 outs.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against No. 13 Christopher Newport in Fredericksburg, Va. to determine who hosts the Coast-to-Coast Conference Semifinal game. If the Eagles win, they'll host the semifinal (and the championship game should they win). First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
