The University of Mary Washington baseball team (RV) continues to find ways to beat ranked opponents as UMW scored nine runs in the ninth inning to come away with a victory over #7/10 Bridgewater on Wednesday in Bridgewater, Va. The Eagles picked up their sixth victory against a ranked foe, their second of the season against a top 10 Bridgewater team, and their fourth win over a top 10 opponent this season.
Ryan Henson homered twice -- a three-run jack in the second, then a two-run homer in the fourth -- in the win. But that was all the offense UMW had as the Eagles went into the eighth inning down a run, 6-5. But
George Rizzo's RBI single in the eighth tied the game at six.
Bridgewater, though, scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-6 lead heading into the final frame as it erased a five-run deficit over the middle innings. But that's when UMW's offense became patient and came alive in the final inning.
To begin the frame,
Benjamin Rossi doubled down the left field line to lift some life into the UMW offense, then the Bridgewater pitchers had issues with finding the strike zone. Henson drew a walk, then
Cole Powers did the same.
Gavin Cunningham, pinch-hitting, drew a four pitch walk to plate Rossi for the first run of the inning. Then,
Henry Britt, who entered as a defensive sub in the previous inning, tied the game with a two-RBI single at nine apiece with no outs.
Following a strikeout,
Eric Powell singled to load the bases again before Rizzo drew a walk that drove in the go-ahead run, 10-9. Then,
William Tuttle lifted a sac fly to give UMW a 11-9 advantage. Rossi then singled home Powell before Henson's infield single loaded the bases once more. Powers was hit by a pitch to drive in UMW's 13th run as
Charlie Grove, another pinch-hitter, added two more with a two-RBI single to cap the explosive final frame.
Matthew Boyd came in for the final inning and slammed the door on Bridgewater to give UMW its 22nd victory of the season.
Jake Herbst picked up the critical final out of the eighth inning and
Matthew Caldwell went 6.2 innings, allowing the Eagles to save their arms for Thursday's matchup with Randolph-Macon in Fredericksburg at 4 p.m.
