The University of Mary Washington softball team swept Maine-Presque Isle on Sunday, slugging its way to a pair of mercy-ruled wins in Fredericksburg, Va. to improve to 10-8 this season.
Game 1 - Eagles win, 13-5
The Eagles fell behind by three runs in the first inning, but an
Erica Shoop two-RBI double in the bottom half cut into the deficit, 3-2. In the second, the Owls plated two more to take a 5-2 lead.
But that's when UMW struck and didn't look back. In the third,
Shelby Presgrave dropped a bunt for a single and drew a bad throw, which allowed
Lindsey Poole to score from second base, 5-3.
Emily Mousso then singled home a run to cut the gap to one, 5-4. A
Linsey Spillman single tied the score at five before
Kennedy Darling dropped a sac bunt to give the Eagles the lead for good.
In the fourth,
Erica Shoop drove a sac fly to center field, then Mousso drove in a pair of runs on a single, then forced a throwing error by the third baseman to up the lead to 9-5. And in the fifth, Mary Washington would add three more as
Emily Angel doubled home
Bayly Yerigan, then Presgrave singled, driving in Angel before Mousso singled to extend the lead to 12-5.
Erica Shoop ended the game after reaching on a throwing error that drove in Angel to give UMW a 13-5 win in the sixth inning.
Sofia Ponce settled the pitching staff down as she tossed five shutout innings en route to the victory out of the bullpen.
Game 2 - Eagles win, 12-0
Mary Washington built on the victory as it came out to score six runs in the first inning.
Maeve Haun, Yerigan, Angel, and Shoop all scored on wild pitches to open the game for the Eagles, then
Allyson Jones laced a two-RBI single into right field to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead by the time the inning concluded. In the second, Shoop singled home a run to push the lead to 7-0.
In the third, Claie Suto reached on a fielding error, which allowed a pair of runs to score, then Presgrave singled a run home to push the lead to 10-0. And finally in the fourth,
Sydney Jester doubled a pair of runs home.
Stephanie Csontos and
Charlotte Daniels combined to strike six hitters out and hold the Owls scoreless.
The Eagles are back in action against No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday in Virginia Beach, Va. at 2 p.m.
