UMW Baseball Sweeps Southern Virginia; Walks-Off Game 1

The University of Mary Washington of Mary Washington swept its Saturday doubleheader with Southern Virginia at Dickinson Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles won a back-and-forth game on Nicholas Chambers' walk-off bunt single before turning in a dominant pitching performance with crafty base running in Game 2.

Game 1 - Eagles win 11-10

In Game 1, the Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after a pair of RBI doubles from Cole Powers and Sean Smith drove in a run each. In the second, UMW added a third run on a Powers' bases-loaded walk.

The Knights struck back in the third with a run, cutting the deficit to 3-1, but a Smith sac fly gave UMW another three-run lead, 4-1. The Knights scored four in the top of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead, but UMW tied it in the bottom half on an Oliver Martin and William Tuttle double steal.

In the fifth, Ryan Henson doubled home a pair of runs to break the tie before Benjamin Rossi scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles an 8-5 lead. After the Knights tied the game once more in the seventh, it was Henson who once again broke the tie with an RBI single before Martin added another run on a single to give UMW a 10-8 lead. Southern Virginia tied it once more in the top of the ninth, but after an Eric Powell double and a Chambers sac bunt attempt that turned into a hit that drove Powell home, the Eagles came away with the walk-off victory.

Every player that took an at-bat recorded a hit for Mary Washington as Smith had three, while Powers, Tuttle, Rossi, and Henson all had two knocks each. Peyton Chavis recorded his first career win after coming on in relief.

Game 2 - Eagles win 6-0

In Game 2, the Eagles used dominant pitching, timely hitting, and crafty base running to come away with the victory. The Eagles struck for four runs in the first -- the first coming when Connor Hassan reached on a fielder's choice that drove in a run. And with the bases loaded, Rossi came through with a three-run double that gave UMW a 4-0 lead.

UMW added another run on Rossi's sac fly in the fourth, then another on an Collin Clarkson single in the sixth. In all, the Eagles drew eight walks and stole 10 bags as Hassan led the way with three steals on the bases.

Jackson Myers turned in a great performance on the mound as he tossed six innings of one-hit baseball, blanking Southern Virginia on the scoreboard. He added nine punchouts and only had to work around two base runners in his outing. Meanwhile, Jake Herbst, Jackson Beale, and Nick Jordan all tossed an inning each in the shutout.

The Eagles are back in action on Sunday against RPI at 2 p.m. at Dickinson Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va.
