The University of Mary Washington baseball team fell in a Saturday doubleheader to John Carroll at Dickinson Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va.
Game 1 - Eagles fall, 7-4
A six-run fifth became the Eagles Achilles heel on Saturday as the Blue Streaks tagged UMW for another run in the sixth. After a four shutout innings from starting pitcher
Matthew Boyd, a few hits, walks, and an error led to six runs coming across to score (three earned).
Gavin Riley came out of the bullpen and gave UMW length as he provided length with 4.1 innings of one-run ball.
The Eagles got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth when a pair of singles and a
Connor Hassan RBI single gave UMW its first run of the ballgame. After a double steal,
Benjamin Rossi drove home a pair of runs to cut into the lead, 7-3. UMW got another run back in the eighth when Hassan singled home
Collin Clarkson to cut into the deficit, 7-4, but it was all Mary Washington would get.
Game 2 - Eagles fall, 8-3
In Game 2, UMW opened with a pair of runs as
Cole Powers singled the first run of the game home before
Eric Powell drove home the next one in with a sac fly that gave UMW the lead, 2-0. But the Blue Streaks got a pair of runs back in the second to tie UMW at two apiece.
An RBI single in the third gave John Carroll the lead for good in Game 2 before it added five more between the fourth and sixth innings. In the seventh,
William Tuttle singled home a run to cut into the lead, 7-3.
Michael Liu (0.2 innings),
Jake Herbst (one inning),
Andrew Poon (one inning), and
Matthew Caldwell (one inning) all combined to hold the Blue Streaks scoreless for the final 11 outs of Saturday's game.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday with a matchup against Eastern Mennonite at 2:30 p.m. in Fredericksburg.
