Sophomore guard
Kye Robinson tied a career high with 38 points, breaking the school record for single game shooting percentage, in leading the third ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 93-63 victory over the University of California Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles, winners of nine straight, improve to 18-1 on the season.
Both teams came out of the gate shooting well, with Robinson making four jumpers and sophomore guard
Ulysses Young adding five points, as the Eagles led, 13-10, with 14:43 remaining in the first. Junior
Hasan Hammad followed with a three pointer, and a pair of Josh Seworder baskets gave UMW a 21-15 lead with 12:17 left.
The Eagle lead swelled to ten with a pair of baskets from Young and two from junior forward
Jay Randall. Three point buckets from
Jadon Burgess and
Kaden Bates upped the margin to 41-24 with 4:54 to go, Robinson made another jumper as well as a three pointer, and connected on a pair of free throws, along with Young, to give UMW a 54-37 lead at halftime. Robinson went 9-9 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Santa Cruz opened the second half by making their first two shots, combated by a pair of scores from Burgess. After a
Colin Mitchell three, Robinson scored a layup and a three pointer to put the Eagles up, 70-42, with 14:56 left. Robinson and
Preston White added baskets to grow the lead to 32 points.Â
The Banana Slugs connected on two three pointers, and pulled to within 74-52 with 10:24. After making his first 13 field goal attempts, Robinson missed two before making two more down the stretch before being subbed out with 3:44 to go.Â
The Eagles saw 11 players score, with Robinson's historic day ending with 38 points (15-17 from the field, 2-2 3 pt. attempts, 6-7 free throws), while also adding a team-high eight rebounds and a team-high seven assists. Young scored 12 on 4-8 shooting, as did Burgess, who made 4-9 shots.
UMW shot 34-59 from the floor (57.6%), making 10-22 three point attempts and 15-18 free throws. Santa Cruz shot 21-47 (44.7%), making 9-21 three point tries and 12-18 free throws. UMW held a 30-28 rebounding edge. The Eagles forced 18 turnovers while committing just five.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, when they visit #14 Christopher Newport University at 7:00 p.m.
