The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team fell to Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, 2-1, at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va., but freshman midfielder
Caleb Perry netted his first career goal in the process to tie the game in the second half.
The Tigers netted the first goal in the 32' after a UMW defender pulled a player down in the box, leading to a foul and a penalty kick that was converted. Neither team could take control in the field half as each team had three shots each.
In the second half, Perry was able to tie the game in the 61' when
Andrew Brittain found him alone at the top of the box. Perry, from about 20 yards out, ripped a shot with his left boot past the diving keeper for his first career score.
The Tigers, though, found the game-winning goal on a breakaway goal to take a 2-1 lead in the 85'. The Eagles were able to control most of the possession in the second half, however, as they led in shots by five, 10-5.
Mary Washington is back in action on Saturday at Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. First touch is set for 6 p.m.
