Four Eagles Score in UMW Women's Soccer's Win Over Southern Virginia

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team had no issues in its 4-0 victory over Southern Virginia on Tuesday evening in Fredericksburg, Va. Marla Vera-Sanchez, Layla Royster, Elise McGee, and Maci Landel all scored for the Eagles in the win.

The Eagles got started on their rout early as Vera-Sanchez netted the first goal in the 12' as Emma Braxton took a shot that was saved by the Knights keeper before the ball landed at Vera-Sanchez's feet and found the back of the net. Twenty minutes later, Landel was able to find Royster in the box on a cross to net the Eagles' second goal of the evening.

In the 36', Hailey Baltzelle took control of a Knight turnover near the top of the box before shuffling the left five feet to her left where McGee was standing. And from the top of the box, McGee ripped a shot past the Southern Virginia keeper to score UMW's third goal of the first half.

The Eagles controlled possession in the first half after the Knights took a shot early as they out-shot SVU by 10, 11-1 with three other shots needing to be saved by the keeper. Emily Orn came up with UMW's lone save of the day just 20 seconds into the game.

In the second half, UMW netted its final goal in the 62' when Olivia Ewing found Landel streaking towards the middle of the box. Ewing crossed the ball from the left to the right before finding Landel's feet as the senior forward scored to put UMW up by four.

Braxton, Vera-Sanchez, Taylor Garofalo, and Gloria Abiassi all recorded shots that needed to be saved by the SVU keeper in the second half, while Emily Box beat the keeper but hit the post -- nearly missing UMW's fifth goal of the night.

Emily Orn and the backline put up another shutout for UMW -- the Eagles' seventh this season as they moved their record to 9-1-3 this year.

All told, UMW out-shot the Knights by 17, 20-3, and had 11 shots-on-goal, while Southern Virginia had just one.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Salisbury to take on the Sea Gulls. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
