The six th ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Penn State Abington, 87-71, on Saturday afternoon in Abington, Pa. The Eagles improve to 16-1 on the season.
The Eagles scored the first six points of the game, before the Lions answered with six of their own. The game remained tight, within a two-possession contest for much of the first half, until a basket from
Owen Pottenburgh and four points from
Kye Robinson upped the Eagle lead to double figures, at 26-15, with 6:27 left. UMW closed the half with 14 points in the final 5:04, capped by a three pointer from
Hasan Hammad with 20 seconds remaining. UMW led at the half, 44-26.
In the second half, the Lions opened swiftly, trimming the margin to single digits, before another Hammad three gave the Eagles a 49-37 lead with 16:32 remaining, Strong three point shooting from Abington helped keep them in the game until a 14-0 Eagle run followed to give the guests a 72-49 lead with 8:38 left.
Jadon Burgess hit back-to-back three pointers in the stretch, and Robinson added four points.
Jay Randall and Robinson scored down the stretch to combat Abington's success at the free throw line for the final margin.
Robinson led the Eagles with 27 points on 9-17 shooting, and added 11 rebounds for a double double, as well as five assists. Randall and Burgess each reached double figures with 12 points apiece, with Hammad scoring nine and
Kaden Bates and
Ulysses Young each netting eight.
The Eagles shot 54.2% from the field (32-59), making 7-18 three point attempts and 16-21 free throws. Abington shot 41.5% (22-53), with 12-25 three pointers made and 15-16 free throws. UMW held a 34-28 rebounding edge.
Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles visit Salisbury University at 5:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Eagle women.
