The No. 9 University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used a pair of first half goals to scoot by No. 4 Washington & Lee on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. to earn a 2-1 win over the Generals.
The Eagles got an early score from
Sammy Amorose within the first three minutes of the game to put the Eagles up by a goal, 1-0. Then, Washington & Lee countered with a goal on a penalty kick after drawing a handball off of UMW in the 18-yard-box.
The Eagles, then, earned their game-winner when Amorose found
Mason Landreth in the box to set up the game-winning goal as Landreth placed the ball past the Generals keeper to put UMW up by a goal, 2-1.
It proved that it would be all the Eagles needed in their victory as
Tristan Kickbush stopped just about every shot put his way on Sunday afternoon, recording six saves en route to the victory. UMW and W&L were just about evenly matched all afternoon as the two tied in shots with the Generals just edging the Eagles in shots-on-goal, 7-5, and corner kicks, 4-3.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday in Richmond, Va. as they take on Hampden-Sydney at City Stadium at 7 p.m.
