Carter Berg, Nelsar Castillo, Yasmin Deane Named 2024-25 UMW Athletes of the Year

First team All-America soccer seniors Carter Berg and Nelsar Castillo and first year track All-American Yasmin Deane have been named as winners of the 2024-25 University of Mary Washington Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Castillo and Berg, co-winners of the Male award, were both first team All-America selections by the United Soccer Coaches, after leading the Eagles to a national #1 ranking for much of the season. The Eagles finished with a 19-2-2 record after winning the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference championship for the third straight year, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament sweet 16 for the third straight year.

Berg picked up his second All-America honor after becoming just the fifth member of the Eagles' 100-point club this past season. In his career, Berg netted 40 goals and 30 assists, 14 scores came this past season -- a career-high -- as did nine of his assists. The Reston, Va. native recorded five braces this past season against NC Wesleyan (twice), Christopher Newport (twice), and Bethany. He scored the game-winning golden goal in overtime to clinch the C2C Championship -- the Eagles' third straight -- for UMW.

Castillo netted a career-high five goals this season and added four assists. The Falls Church, Va. native recorded a brace against Mount Union in a 3-1 victory in Richmond, Va. on Sept. 13. He was named all-region and All-America for the first time, gaining first team honors. His ability to possess the ball in traffic and find open teammates was integral in the Eagles' success.

The winner of the Female award, Deane burst onto the scene as the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Female Indoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year after a winter that saw her break school indoor records in the 60 meter dash (7.69 seconds) as well as the 200 meters (25.83), also smashing the conference mark in the 60 meters.
Her outdoor season brought more accolades, as she gained C2C Rookie of the Year, C2C Track Athlete of the Week twice, and broke school and conference records in the 100 meters (11.57) and 200 meters (24.35). She gained All-America honors in the 200 with a 16th place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.

The UMW Athletes of the Year have been awarded every year since 2014.
