The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-11 decision at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon in the semifinal of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Eagles fall to 11-7 on the season.
After the Captains jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the Eagles battled back, netting the next two, as
Kimber Konen scored on a
Molly Daw pass at 8:46, and
Tori Mueller added another from a Konen assist at 4:27. After CNU scored to extend its lead, UMW again answered with a pair of goals, as
Sadie Laughlin scored with 2:40 remaining, and
Anna Dube knotted the score on a Mueller assist with 49 seconds left.
The teams traded scores in the first half of the second quarter, wih Daw scoring the Eagles' goal. Christopher Newport scored the final three goals of the second quarter and the first three of the third to build an 11-5 lead. Konen scored on a Mueller assist with 3:45 remaining, but the Captains closed with another score to take a 12-6 advantage to the fourth quarter.
CNU scored three to open the fourth, before Laughlin scored on an
Ashley Firesheets pass. Firesheets and Dube netted goals midway through the fourth to cut the deficit to 16-9, and Mueller and Firesheets added scores down the stretch.
CNU led in shots, 34-25, as well as draw controls, 18-14. UMW goalkeeper
Allison Carolan made six saves on the day.
